Hi,I'm Kuma.

Today,I explain how to say How old are you? in Japanese.

Inu
I want to know that expression!
Neko
I explain that!

It's important question to tell this question, this is because many people care about the age.

Today,I tell you how to say "How old are you" in Japanese with how to answer that when you're heard by others. There are two expressions

How old are you in Japanese

  • なんさい?(Nansai?)
  • いくつ?(Ikutu?)

なんさい?(Nansai?)

The first phrase is "なんさい?(Nansai?)".  なん(Nan) means "how" in this phrase, and さい(Sai) means "years old". These two words combine and this phrase means "how old"

Example

Neko
あなたはなんさいですか?(Anatawa nansaidesuka?)
Inu
わたしは、ごさいです。(Watashiwa Gosaidesu)

・あなたは(Anatawa) = you

・なんさいですか(Nansaidesuka)=It's the polite expression of nansai.

・わたしは(Watashiwa)= I

・ごさいです。(Gosaidesu)=Go means 5 so this sentence means I'm five years old.

いくつ(Ikutu?)

いくつ(Ikutu) has several meaning, and one of them is ”How old are you?" in English. Another meaning of いくつ is "How many".

Example

Neko
あなたのとしはいくつですか?(Oikutudesuka?)
Inu
よんさいです。(Yonsaidesu)

・とし(toshi)= age

・よんさい(Yonsai)= 4 years old

how to make good conversation after asking "いくつ" and "なんさい"

Next, I explain the good flow after asking a question.

Neko
なんさいですか?(Nansaidesuka?)
Inu
30さいです。(Nijjusaidesu)
Neko
ほんとうですか?みえないですね!
Inu
What's the meaning of these expressions?

本当ですか?(Hontou desuka?)

Really? you express suprising at hearing the age.

見えないですね(Mienai desune)

It means "you don't look like your age." (It implys that you look young compared with your age)I always use phrase when I ask older people than me,haha.

If you master these two expressions, your response becomes perfect!
